After discussing matters at the G20 meeting in South Africa, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to resume trade negotiations. This development marks a significant shift from the strained relations between the two nations in recent years. Tensions escalated in 2023 when former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that agents of the Indian government were implicated in the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Subsequently, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) publicly accused these agents of orchestrating a series of violent acts, including murders, extortions, and threats within the South Asian community in Canada. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) director has recently indicated that the issue persists.

In British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, there have been over 100 reported cases of extortion in the past year. Two CBC journalists, who have extensively covered this matter, delve into the details of the situation in Canada, particularly focusing on the extortion activities, potential perpetrators, and how these incidents tie into the broader narrative of improving relations with India. Baneet Braich operates from Abbotsford, B.C., while Evan Dyer is part of CBC’s Parliamentary bureau.
