Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently discussed her journey with the iconic book “The Gruffalo” in an interview. When Donaldson initially penned the tale over two decades ago, she had doubts about its success, deeming it too dark for children’s literature. However, the story’s unique rhyming style and unconventional plot defied industry norms, ultimately captivating readers.

Fast forward to today, Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler have released “Gruffalo Granny,” the latest addition to the beloved series. Donaldson hints that this may be the final installment, emphasizing her focus on crafting quality stories rather than catering to a specific audience.

The narrative of “Gruffalo Granny” revolves around the original Gruffalo and his child preparing for the arrival of the ravenous Gruffalo Granny. Donaldson shared that writing this new book evoked the same creative process and dedication as the original “Gruffalo,” showcasing her commitment to storytelling excellence.

The promotion of “Gruffalo Granny” reached unprecedented levels, with the book quickly becoming a bestseller in the U.K. NielsenIQ BookScan data revealed that within just ten days of its release, the book had surpassed all others in sales across genres and age groups.

Alison Ruane, managing director of Macmillan Children’s Books, expressed pride in the enduring popularity of Donaldson and Scheffler’s creations. The heartwarming stories have transcended generations, with adults now sharing these tales with their children and grandchildren.

While Donaldson hinted that the Gruffalo chapter may be closing, her passion for children’s literature remains unwavering. Her upcoming book, “Winnifred Duck,” inspired by a real-life event involving rubber ducks lost at sea, is set to hit shelves soon. Donaldson’s ability to weave captivating narratives from everyday events continues to charm readers worldwide.
