Outkast members Big Boi and André 3000 have taken legal action against Ovrkast, an Oakland-based rapper and music producer, for allegedly infringing on their trademark, engaging in unfair competition, and breaching a contract due to similarities in their names. The lawsuit, filed in Georgia on September 16 by High Schoolers LLC, the entity managing Outkast’s trademarks, claims that Ovrkast, also known as Silas Wilson, knowingly used a name closely resembling Outkast without permission. The complaint, spanning 31 pages, emphasizes Outkast’s reputation, influence, and valuable brand, highlighting failed attempts to resolve the matter amicably. Atlanta-based Outkast cited a 2025 Rolling Stone interview where Wilson discussed the confusion between Ovrkast and Outkast as evidence of misleading fans.

In response to the lawsuit, Wilson, who has collaborated with artists like Earl Sweatshirt and Drake, posted a reaction on Instagram, expressing surprise at the legal action and referencing a previous settlement agreement to transition to the name Overkxst. However, the lawsuit alleges that Wilson delayed adhering to the agreement, leading to a breakdown in communication and a continued use of the Ovrkast name. Outkast’s legal action seeks to prohibit Wilson from using the Ovrkast name, cover legal expenses, and relinquish profits gained from the alleged unauthorized activities. They also demand the destruction of all Ovrkast-branded merchandise. Attempts to reach Wilson for comment on the lawsuit were unsuccessful.

The dispute between Outkast and Ovrkast underscores the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and the challenges faced in the music industry due to name similarities and brand confusion.
