Cineplex has announced the appointment of Bill Walker as its new CEO and disclosed the consideration of a potential sale. The company’s board, while expressing confidence in its future, is engaging in a Strategic Review to explore avenues to enhance shareholder value. This review includes assessing various options, such as a potential sale of the company.

Goldman Sachs and TD Securities have been appointed as co-financial advisers for the strategic review. Cineplex, known as the largest cinema chain in Canada, operates over 1,600 movie screens in nearly 170 theaters nationwide, employing more than 10,000 individuals in its entertainment venues.

In 2019, Cineplex was previously involved in a sale agreement with Cineworld Group PLC for $2.8 billion, which ultimately did not materialize. Former CEO Ellis Jacob will be supporting the board as a special adviser during the strategic review process.

The Chair of Cineplex’s board, Phyllis Yaffe, highlighted the company’s strong market position and leading entertainment assets. Bill Walker, who previously led Landmark Cinemas and oversaw its sale to Kinepolis in 2017, expressed support for the strategic review. He emphasized the importance of operational excellence, exceptional guest experiences, and creating value for shareholders, regardless of the review’s outcome.
