In the realm of cryptocurrency, the winners and losers are often debated. Ben McKenzie, known for his role as Ryan Atwood in the TV show “The O.C.,” has shifted his focus to what he deems as the “largest Ponzi scheme in history” – cryptocurrency.

According to McKenzie, the crypto industry tends to benefit a select few insiders who amass significant profits, while the majority of regular investors end up losing money. His exploration of this issue is featured in his recent documentary, “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money,” which premiered in theaters in April.

McKenzie’s interest in cryptocurrency was piqued when a friend suggested they invest in it, despite not fully understanding its workings. With an economics background, McKenzie delved into the industry and was struck by what he perceived as its lack of substance.

In 2022, McKenzie testified before a U.S. Senate committee on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled “Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.” While some in the industry have criticized his documentary for promoting negative narratives about cryptocurrency, McKenzie asserts that his aim is to advocate for increased regulation to safeguard investors.

In a conversation with guest host Lyndsay Duncombe on “The Current,” McKenzie discussed the harmful impact of cryptocurrency on men, emphasizing its allure of potential wealth and the tendency for men to remain silent about financial losses.

Despite instances of individuals losing substantial sums in various cryptocurrencies, McKenzie noted that some continue to invest, driven by a mix of faith and the desire for financial success. He highlighted the psychological concept of the sunk-cost fallacy, where individuals feel compelled to persevere in their investments to avoid acknowledging losses.

McKenzie underscored the importance of recognizing cryptocurrency as a risky venture that often preys on individuals’ financial vulnerabilities, emphasizing the need for a societal shift towards providing better alternatives to gambling-like investments. He cautioned that while criticisms of the traditional financial system are valid, cryptocurrency may not offer a superior alternative and could pose greater risks for investors.
