The latest government data reveals that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed the lives of 2,325 individuals, making it the deadliest in the country’s history, surpassing the toll from the 2018-2020 outbreak. The country’s public health institute reported an increase in confirmed cases to 4,945, with 101 new cases detected within the previous 24 hours.
This outbreak, the 17th in the country, already holds the record for the highest number of cases in Congo’s history, a milestone achieved in late July. The total number of deaths has now exceeded the 2,299 fatalities recorded in the previous 2018-2020 outbreak, which was the worst on record in the country.
With 4,945 confirmed cases, the current outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola has no approved vaccines or treatments. The rising case fatality ratio, from around 20% in early June to 46% according to government data, indicates that nearly half of the confirmed cases are now fatal.
Although the trend does not suggest the virus has become more lethal, it highlights persistent challenges in surveillance, case detection, and access to care. The outbreak, declared on May 15, has faced obstacles such as weak health infrastructure, community resistance, and instability, hindering efforts to identify and respond to cases effectively.
The outbreak has witnessed a rapid spread since its declaration, with concerns about its potential to extend beyond Congo’s borders. While trials for a vaccine are ongoing, no approved treatments are available currently. International health authorities are evaluating experimental vaccines and therapies, as well as existing Ebola treatments for potential protection.
The outbreak, which has also affected neighboring Uganda but was contained with limited deaths and cases, underscores the urgency of controlling the spread of the virus. Ebola transmission occurs through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, leading to symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in severe instances, internal and external bleeding.
