U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to reduce upcoming joint military exercises with South Korea. Trump justified his decision by pointing out South Korea’s refusal to support the denuclearization of Iran and highlighting his positive relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

In a social media post, Trump criticized the planned exercises for their cost and perceived hostility towards North Korea. He emphasized North Korea’s non-threatening behavior during his presidency and instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to significantly scale back the joint military drills.

This move follows previous attempts by Trump to halt such exercises, with the South Korean Defence Ministry confirming that the drills commenced as scheduled. The South Korean presidential Blue House indicated it was reviewing Trump’s directive and expressed hope that the amicable relations between the U.S. and North Korea could foster meaningful dialogue for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Despite Trump’s assertion that South Korea declined to assist in denuclearizing Iran, Seoul stated it was exploring potential military contributions while assessing its defense readiness and legal procedures. The decision underscores Trump’s inclination to align with perceived adversaries over allies, with the U.S. administration also criticizing NATO partners for insufficient support in various geopolitical matters.

The joint military exercises involving 18,000 South Korean troops aim to enhance preparedness against North Korean threats. These drills, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, reinforce the alliance’s role in regional security and demonstrate the commitment between the U.S. and South Korea to defend their territories.

The exercises come amid heightened tensions following North Korea’s ballistic missile testing activities, which violated UN regulations. Trump’s stance on reducing joint drills faced backlash from Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, who deemed it short-sighted. North Korea has warned of strong retaliation against the U.S. and South Korea, viewing the exercises as provocative and destabilizing.

As North Korea intensifies its nuclear and missile programs, experts suggest that Kim Jong-un aims to leverage his arsenal for future negotiations with the U.S. Despite stalled diplomatic efforts, Trump has shown willingness to engage with Kim, with the latest directive to scale back military exercises occurring shortly after a meeting between the two leaders.
