A snowstorm is forecasted to hit a significant portion of Newfoundland on Wednesday, causing messy conditions. The Clarenville and Bonavista region have been placed under orange weather alerts by Environment Canada, while central Newfoundland and the Avalon Peninsula are under a yellow warning.
Anticipated snowfall in the Clarenville and Bonavista area ranges from 30 to 40 centimetres, accompanied by winds reaching 80 to 100 km/h. Orange alerts suggest substantial impacts such as widespread wind, ice storms, and major power outages.
For the Avalon Peninsula, higher snowfall amounts are expected inland, with a mix of rain and snow along the coast. Northwestern areas may see 15 to 30 centimetres of snow, while the St. John’s area could receive 10 to 15 centimetres.
A wind warning has been issued for the northern Avalon region, with wind gusts potentially reaching 80 to 100 km/h until Thursday morning. The Burin Peninsula is also under a yellow warning, with approximately 25 centimetres of snow predicted inland and slightly less towards the coast, along with rain.
Gander and the Grand Falls-Windsor area are likely to experience 10 to 20 centimetres of snow by Wednesday afternoon, leading to potential disruptions in travel and ferry schedules, as per Environment Canada’s advisory.
