The Ottawa Rapid have named Carmelina Moscato, a former Canadian national team defender, as their new head coach for the upcoming season. The current head coach, Katrine Pedersen, disclosed her departure from the Northern Super League leaders at the season’s end last month.
Moscato, a distinguished member of the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame, boasts an impressive career having participated in three Women’s World Cups and clinched a bronze at the 2012 Olympics. Following her playing career, she has ventured into coaching roles in Denmark, Mexico, and most recently in Saudi Arabia.
The Rapid confirmed that Moscato has signed a two-season contract and will commence her duties this year, focusing on preparations for 2027, including player recruitment. Thomas Gilbert, the team’s CEO, expressed confidence in Moscato’s leadership qualities, coaching expertise, and profound understanding of Canadian soccer.
In a statement, Gilbert stated, “Carmelina is a proven leader with exceptional coaching experience, technical knowledge, and a deep understanding of Canadian soccer.” Moscato expressed her excitement about joining the team, stating, “The Rapid have laid a solid foundation in a short time frame… I am eager to contribute to this progress and create an environment where players can excel, grow, and compete at the highest level.”
Currently leading the NSL standings with 10 victories in 15 matches, Ottawa Rapid’s only defeat occurred in late May. The team’s upcoming match is scheduled in Calgary at 4 p.m. this Saturday and will be broadcast live on CBC Gem.
