A TTC staff member was stabbed and suffered serious injuries at a downtown subway station in Toronto on Wednesday, with a male suspect now in police custody. The incident took place at Dundas station on Line 1 around 1:10 p.m., according to Toronto police. The suspect, who was apprehended on-site, also sustained serious injuries.
Both the victim and the suspect were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as confirmed by Toronto paramedics. Police maintained a significant presence in the area during the investigation.
TTC CEO Mandeep Lali expressed deep concern over the attack on the employee, emphasizing that such violence against those serving the community is unacceptable. Lali conveyed thoughts for the employee’s recovery, stating that safety remains a top priority for the TTC. The TTC announced plans to collaborate closely with Toronto Police to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach to violence within the transit system.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw revealed plans to increase police presence on specific sections of Line 1 by the year’s end, expanding the neighbourhood community officer program. This initiative aims to provide dedicated coverage between Union and Wellesley stations, as well as between Bloor and Eglinton stations, ensuring transit users feel secure seven days a week. Additional patrols will be prioritized at Union and Bloor stations, with officers collaborating with TTC personnel and city officials to support vulnerable individuals during crises on the TTC.
According to the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113, which represents TTC employees, the injured staff member is a customer service agent who sustained a stab wound to the arm and is receiving emergency medical attention. The union advocates for a zero-tolerance policy towards violence within Toronto’s transit system.
Following the incident, subway services were temporarily disrupted at Dundas station due to the police investigation, but regular operations resumed by 7:45 p.m.
