During the Christmas season, vibrant red, pink, white, yellow, and even orange foliage signals the arrival of poinsettias in offices, homes, malls, and churches nationwide. In Kitchener, Ontario, city hall and community centers will soon be adorned with hundreds of locally grown poinsettias from the city’s greenhouses.

Rob Jacob, the City of Kitchener’s assistant supervisor of horticulture and community gardens, emphasizes the meticulous care required to cultivate over 800 poinsettias for the holidays. Describing them as delicate “princesses,” he underscores the need for specific temperature and light conditions to achieve their colorful display.

Although poinsettias are traditionally associated with the holiday season, they are sensitive to cold temperatures. Placing them in drafty areas can cause leaf drop, necessitating protection from chilly breezes.

Originating in Mexico, poinsettias have a rich history. Named “flore de nochebuena” by Spanish-speaking Mexicans for their red hue during Christmas, the plant was introduced to the United States by Joel Roberts Poinsett in the 19th century. While commonly seen during the holidays, poinsettias can grow into large shrubs if cared for properly.

Red remains the preferred color for poinsettias, with a higher demand compared to other variations like speckled or multi-colored varieties. Despite a slight decline in popularity, poinsettias continue to hold a special place in holiday decorations. Alternative plants like Christmas cactus and cyclamens are gaining favor for their longevity and resilience to cooler indoor conditions.

In recent years, a new tropical plant called Princettias has emerged as a poinsettia alternative. With a slender bract and a wider range of colors, Princettias offer an extended shelf life beyond the holiday season.

Proper care tips for poinsettias include ensuring bright light, draft-free environments, and moderate watering to prevent root rot. Removing any decorative wrapping that impedes drainage is crucial for their well-being. While some may find poinsettias challenging to care for, their exquisite beauty and holiday charm continue to captivate plant enthusiasts.
