Violence during a speaking engagement in Toronto has triggered demands for increased scrutiny of Israeli soldiers entering Canada, with some advocating for their entry to be denied or for investigations into potential involvement in war crimes linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

At an event organized by Students Supporting Israel (SSI) at Toronto Metropolitan University, where Israel Defence Forces (IDF) soldiers were featured as speakers, six protesters were arrested and charged by the police. While SSI attributed the chaotic situation to the protesters, videos shared by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) Toronto depicted an IDF soldier physically engaging with the protesters.

The IDF soldiers were in Canada as part of the Triggered: From Combat to Campus tour. NDP MP Heather McPherson expressed outrage over the incident, calling for immediate action, including investigating any IDF soldier entering Canada under the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act for public safety reasons.

SJP Toronto urged the Canadian government to ban Israeli soldiers from entering the country and initiate war crime inquiries for those already present. Various advocacy groups, such as Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, Independent Jewish Voices, and the National Council of Canadian Muslims, have previously called for investigations into IDF soldiers amid allegations of Israeli genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

In response to the incident, an SSI spokesperson defended the soldiers’ presence, emphasizing that they aimed to share frontline experiences and criticized McPherson’s remarks for allegedly supporting protesters who trespassed violently during the event.

Legal experts highlighted the complexities surrounding the investigation or barring of IDF soldiers in Canada due to legal and diplomatic considerations. The UN report accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza and international obligations under the Genocide Convention and ICC rulings were referenced to underscore the need for thorough scrutiny of potential war crimes.

Concerns were raised about the fear of retaliation faced by Israeli soldiers abroad, citing cases of arrests in other countries. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs denounced calls for investigations as discriminatory and emphasized the mandatory military service requirement in Israel.

The discussion on prosecuting soldiers for war crimes was noted as challenging, given the evidentiary requirements and the nature of conflict in Gaza. Calls for structured investigations and interviewing soldiers entering Canada as part of the RCMP’s ongoing inquiry were also highlighted for accountability.

The sensitive political nature of the Gaza conflict was acknowledged, with expectations for comprehensive investigations to ensure justice and accountability. The RCMP’s structural investigation into potential war crimes under Canada’s legislation was mentioned, although specifics on the interviewing of soldiers were not confirmed by the RCMP or immigration authorities.
