A petition has been officially launched to recall Nolan Dyck, a member of Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party caucus in Alberta. Elections Alberta has approved this signature-collecting campaign against the first-term Grande Prairie MLA. If successful, the petition will trigger a constituency-wide vote on Dyck’s continued presence in the legislature.

This marks the third recall petition targeting UCP members, following similar actions against Angela Pitt in Airdrie East and Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides in Calgary Bow. The petitioner behind Dyck’s recall, Casey Klein, believes Dyck has disregarded his constituents’ concerns and failed to engage with them. Klein also criticized Dyck’s support for the UCP government’s use of the notwithstanding clause to resolve a recent teachers’ strike.

Dyck defended his actions, stating his commitment to being accessible to his constituents and representing their priorities. He argued against his recall, emphasizing that disagreements over government policies should not warrant such actions. Klein has until mid-February to gather nearly 9,500 signatures to advance the recall process.

Premier Smith expressed concerns over the surge in recall campaigns and hinted at potential amendments to the Recall Act to ensure its proper implementation. The government is also facing increased referendum activities, including proposals on Alberta’s Confederation status and funding for private schools. Country music singer Corb Lund has initiated a referendum drive to ban new coal mining in the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, inspired by Premier Smith’s actions.

Smith welcomed citizen-initiated referenda and emphasized the importance of public participation in decision-making processes. She expressed interest in observing the outcomes of these initiatives, including Lund’s referendum proposal, and acknowledged the impact of citizen engagement in shaping policy discussions.
