Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to South Africa for the G20 summit where opportunities may arise to further trade discussions with other nations in the absence of U.S. President Donald Trump. A senior Canadian official revealed plans to collaborate with other countries in Johannesburg, focusing on raising funds, promoting Canada’s critical minerals sector, and forming ad hoc groups of nations.

During his visit, Carney is expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from France, Norway, the European Union, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In contrast, Trump has criticized South Africa for hosting the summit and declined to attend, with the only U.S. representation being a diplomat for a handover ceremony.

With Trump absent, attention at the summit shifts, providing Carney with a unique opportunity to engage in one-on-one discussions with various world leaders to enhance relationships and foster more trade agreements. Carney’s primary focus is on strengthening Canada’s economy and diversifying trade beyond its reliance on the United States.

In pursuit of these goals, Carney aims to make significant progress during key bilateral meetings, including discussions on foreign investment in Canada. Specific meetings are planned with Qatar to explore investment opportunities, and talks with the European Union regarding the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. Additionally, Carney intends to emphasize Canada’s efforts in critical minerals and advocate for the formation of coalitions to address mutual interests such as clean technology and international finance.

Regarding relations with India, Canada seeks to engage constructively despite past tensions. Efforts are underway to reset the relationship and address differences through dialogue on shared priorities. Carney may soon visit India to further discussions and strengthen ties, although challenges persist due to ongoing issues and public safety concerns.

As Carney navigates these diplomatic engagements, the Canadian government remains committed to improving relations with India while upholding public safety as a top priority. The evolving dynamic between Canada and India underscores the complexities and challenges of international diplomacy.
