Hamilton’s downtown entertainment venue is set to reopen this week following a two-year period of extensive and costly renovations. Rocker Paul McCartney, fresh from a performance in Montreal, is scheduled to take the stage at TD Coliseum for the venue’s first public show on Friday evening as part of the Got Back tour. Prior to this, Earth, Wind and Fire held an invitation-only test event at the location.

Formerly known as FirstOntario Centre and originally opened as Copps Coliseum in 1985, the arena is situated at the intersection of York Boulevard and Bay Street North. The $300-million renovation project, overseen by U.S.-based arena development company Oak View Group, has resulted in significant upgrades to the venue, creating new spaces across both upper and lower levels for improved accessibility compared to the previous design.

Despite maintaining its seating capacity of 18,000, the renovated arena now features enhancements such as box seats at floor level, a new artist lounge, additional elevator access, and a variety of new restaurants. Notable among the dining options is celebrity chef Matty Matheson’s pub-style restaurant, The Iron Cow Public House, which is expected to be a popular choice among visitors.

TD Coliseum’s general manager, Michael Scarpino, expressed his enthusiasm for the revamped venue, highlighting the employment of 400 staff members, predominantly part-time workers, to operate the facility. Emphasizing Hamilton’s strong musical roots, Scarpino noted that the venue is well-equipped to host live music events, with upcoming performances by renowned artists like Cardi B, the Jonas Brothers, and Twice. Additionally, the arena will host the Juno Awards in March.

Local residents shared their anticipation for the venue’s reopening, with many expressing excitement over the diverse lineup of events and the convenience of having major shows right in Hamilton. The improved accessibility to entertainment options within the city was particularly praised, offering residents an opportunity to explore and appreciate Hamilton’s cultural scene.

To accommodate attendees of the upcoming events, including the Friday concert featuring Paul McCartney, transportation services have been adjusted. Metrolinx announced that the last GO Trains departing on the Lakeshore West and East lines will be delayed to ensure concert-goers can travel home comfortably. Hamilton Street Railway will also operate a special shuttle service to transport guests to West Harbour, providing convenient transportation options for visitors attending events at the venue.
