A judge at Weyburn Court of King’s Bench is deliberating on whether to grant bail to a Regina man accused of fatally shooting a woman on a highway near Weyburn. The bail hearing for 42-year-old Chris Fahlman took place over two days, spanning more than 13 hours. Justice Michael Morris has deferred his decision on bail to a later date.

Chris Fahlman’s defense attorney, Nicholas Brown, acknowledged the tragic nature of the shooting and the death of the victim, Tanya Myers. Brown emphasized the importance of upholding the presumption of innocence in such cases and noted that Fahlman, being a father and a hardworking individual, deserves the same presumption as anyone else. Brown also mentioned the prevalence of misinformation surrounding the case, which they anticipate clarifying as the legal proceedings progress to trial.

A publication ban is in effect, covering the information and arguments presented during the hearing. Fahlman, who is facing second-degree murder charges in connection with the shooting incident that led to Myers’s death, appeared in court after arriving in a corrections van. The charges against him also include intentionally discharging a firearm in a manner that endangered another person’s life. The charges stem from an occurrence on September 12 on Highway 39 near Weyburn, where gunfire struck two vehicles in close proximity.

Tanya Myers, 44, was a passenger in a friend’s SUV returning to Weyburn from Regina when she was fatally shot inside the vehicle. Fahlman has been in custody since his arrest in Regina on November 1, which followed a police stop where he was apprehended with drawn firearms. Initially facing manslaughter and gun-related charges, the Crown substituted these charges with second-degree murder and other offenses on November 12, marking the official transfer of the case to Weyburn. Fahlman appeared in Regina’s provincial court multiple times in November, with his bail hearing being postponed several times.
