A recent report by Équité Association has identified the vehicle models most targeted by car thieves in Ontario and other parts of Canada. The organization collaborates with law enforcement to combat crime within the Canadian insurance industry.

While auto theft rates have decreased in the Greater Toronto Area, criminals managed to steal over $1 billion worth of vehicles across Canada in 2024, according to Bryan Gast, vice-president of Équité’s investigative services division. Despite the drop in theft numbers, criminals still view auto theft as a lucrative, low-risk activity.

Data from Équité shows that Honda and Toyota models were among the most stolen vehicles in Ontario in 2024. The 2024 Honda CR-V, 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 Series, and 2019 Honda Civic were the top stolen vehicles by volume, with the 2024 Lexus TX Series leading in frequency.

Nationwide trends reveal that the 2021 Toyota RAV4, 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 Series, 2020 Honda CR-V, 2023 Ford F150 Series, and 2020 Honda Civic were the most commonly stolen cars. Toyota Canada expressed serious concern over the issue of theft and highlighted their continuous efforts to enhance technology to combat auto theft.

Although auto theft rates in Ontario saw a 25.9% decrease in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024, there is still room for improvement, according to Gast. Law enforcement efforts have been credited for the decline in thefts, but areas like Toronto, Peel, York, and Durham remain hotspots for auto theft.

Flex Point Security’s operations manager, Varun Vir Singh, noted that certain vehicle brands like Toyota and Honda are prime targets for thieves due to their high resale values. Singh emphasized the importance of implementing security measures to deter thieves and shared that no vehicle under their protection was stolen in the past year.

To safeguard vehicles, Gast recommends parking in secure areas, locking vehicles, using anti-theft devices like immobilizers and tracking systems, steering wheel locks, and Faraday pouches. He stressed that every extra layer of security makes it more challenging for thieves and highlighted the broader impact of auto theft on communities due to its association with organized crime activities.
