Palestinian assailants fatally stabbed an Israeli and injured three others in the West Bank on Tuesday before being gunned down by Israeli forces, according to the Israeli military. This incident is the latest in a series of violent acts in the region. There have been reports of settler violence against Palestinians in various parts of the West Bank. Concerns have been raised by officials, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, about the potential escalation of unrest and its impact on the fragile ceasefire in Gaza.

The attack occurred at the Gush Etzion junction south of Jerusalem, a location that has seen previous attacks by Palestinian militants. A 71-year-old man succumbed to stab wounds at the scene, while three others were hospitalized, including a woman in serious condition and a teenager in moderate condition. The Israeli military confirmed that two Palestinian attackers, identified as 18-year-olds from the Hebron area by the Palestinian Health Ministry, were shot and killed by Israeli troops.

Hamas did not claim responsibility for the attack but described it as a response to Israeli actions in the occupied territories, vowing to resist Israeli aggression. In a separate incident in Tulkarem, Israeli forces shot cameraman Fadi Yassin in both legs while he was covering a protest. The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clarified by the military.

The violence followed an approval by the United Nations Security Council of U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza governance. While Hamas rejected the plan, other countries expressed willingness to support its implementation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the UN endorsement, emphasizing the plan’s focus on demilitarization and disarmament in Gaza.

The resolution outlines a comprehensive framework for postwar Gaza, including the establishment of an international security force and a transitional authority under U.S. oversight. Despite differing reactions within Gaza, the Palestinian Authority welcomed the resolution and pledged to collaborate with relevant stakeholders for its effective implementation.

The UN vote signifies a potential path towards Palestinian self-determination, albeit without a fixed timeline for statehood. The resolution’s adoption was facilitated by support from Arab and Muslim nations, underscoring the collective effort to uphold the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. The international community is urged to prioritize humanitarian assistance and facilitate the implementation of the resolution for lasting peace in the region.
