An immediate proposal to discuss the prohibition of raising national flags at Calgary city hall was narrowly rejected during a council session on Tuesday. The suggestion, presented by Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean, aimed to address amendments to Calgary’s flag policy during a scheduled public hearing as an urgent matter. These modifications would involve eliminating sections permitting the display of foreign flags at city hall.

McLean expressed concerns that what was once a unifying gesture had evolved into a divisive issue within the community. Despite the defeat of the urgent motion by an 8-7 vote, council members primarily debated the motion’s urgency rather than the proposed changes. McLean indicated his intention to reintroduce the motion to the council’s executive committee at a later date.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas, a vocal advocate for banning the raising of non-Canadian flags at city hall, emphasized that addressing the issue as urgent business would ensure a fair decision-making process. Farkas cautioned that delaying the motion could lead to a flood of additional flag-raising requests under the existing rules, creating an unfair scenario for different communities.

The mayor highlighted that upcoming flag-raising events for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania were still scheduled, underscoring the potential challenges and criticisms that could arise if the policy changed abruptly. According to the mayor’s office, Calgary city hall has flown 36 national flags this year.

While some councillors, like Ward 2’s Jennifer Wyness, questioned the urgency and underlying political motivations of the motion, others like Coun. Nathaniel Schmidt emphasized the importance of consulting with stakeholders, including diverse communities in Ward 8. McLean defended the urgency of the motion, warning that delaying it for political reasons could escalate controversy and division within the community.
