Drivers in Quebec are facing a rush to secure tire change appointments as freezing rain looms and the winter tire deadline approaches. Many are realizing they have delayed too long in scheduling. Marc Prudhomme, owner of Garage Nistech in Gatineau, mentioned that their slots are completely booked for the next two weeks. The imminent freezing rain warning in western Quebec this weekend is coming right before the province’s requirement to switch to winter tires by December 1. Failure to adhere to this deadline could result in fines ranging from $200 to $300, plus additional charges for motorists involved in accidents or traffic violations post the cutoff.

Prudhomme remarked that their schedule has been overflowing with tire changes daily, attributing the surge to an early snowfall in November that kick-started bookings sooner than usual. He also highlighted the challenge of a staffing shortage, which is a prevalent issue across the industry. Despite numerous alerts about hazardous road conditions and the impending deadline, many drivers are still procrastinating. Jesse Caron, an automotive expert from CAA Quebec, emphasized that switching to winter tires is not only mandatory but crucial for safe driving, especially as all-season tires lose traction when temperatures dip below 7 degrees Celsius.

Caron clarified misconceptions about installing winter tires too early, assuring that they won’t deteriorate prematurely if put on as early as mid-October. He stressed the importance of using all-weather tires with the mountain snowflake symbol to comply with Quebec’s regulations, noting that even these are not as effective as winter-specific tires. Prudhomme urged people to be proactive in scheduling their tire changes, stating that snowfall in early November is a predictable occurrence. While Quebec mandates winter tires from December 1 to March 15, Ontario does not have a similar requirement.
