A program focused on enhancing local employment opportunities in the burgeoning battery manufacturing sector has successfully trained over 400 individuals, with 97% of them securing positions within the industry, as reported by Invest WindsorEssex.

The majority of graduates from the Battery Boost initiative are currently employed by NextStar, a prominent battery manufacturer, as stated by Ed Dawson, the executive director of the Automobility and Innovation Centre at Invest WindsorEssex.

During a recent media event honoring the program, two NextStar shift leaders were featured in a video introduced by NextStar CEO Danies Lee, expressing their positive experiences. Nick Maceroni, a shift leader in the notching and drying department, shared his initial lack of knowledge about batteries before joining NextStar, emphasizing the program’s effectiveness in providing comprehensive understanding.

Similarly, Ann Kramer, a shift lead in the roll press department, praised the program’s breadth, which instilled confidence by covering all aspects from material sourcing to production processes.

NextStar’s collaboration with Stellantis in establishing a battery plant for electric vehicles, supported by substantial government incentives, aimed to hire 2,500 employees. While progress has been made with 1,100 positions filled, the timeline for reaching the employment target remains uncertain, pending industrial developments and market demands.

Addressing inquiries about employment obligations tied to government funding, Lee clarified the company’s autonomy from Stellantis, currently embroiled in a dispute over production relocation. Despite challenges in the EV industry, Lee reaffirmed commitment to reaching full employment targets as demand grows.

Invest WindsorEssex intends to continue enrolling new training cohorts in the upcoming year, having recently graduated the 10th group following the program’s launch in February. The training curriculum spans four weeks, covering fundamental battery manufacturing principles, operational procedures, and hands-on experience through virtual simulators and a virtual reality lab to ensure a comprehensive understanding of shop floor activities.
