Provincial health authorities in Edmonton’s downtown have officially announced an outbreak of tuberculosis following laboratory tests confirming two individuals in the inner city carrying the same strain of the contagious illness. Primary Care Alberta (PCA) released a statement on Thursday disclosing the outbreak declaration, which was decided upon last month upon receiving the test results for the two Edmonton residents.

The findings indicate recent local transmission of the disease, according to PCA. Tuberculosis primarily affects the lungs but can also impact other body parts, spreading through coughing, sneezing, and spitting, albeit being treatable with antibiotics.

PCA, a newly established provincial body managing primary health services, has identified 12 tuberculosis cases this year related to central Edmonton and individuals experiencing homelessness. Among these cases, three individuals carrying the same strain are classified as part of the outbreak, as confirmed by the health agency.

Factors such as living in communal settings, including homeless shelters, can heighten the risk of tuberculosis transmission. As of now, the outbreak does not pose a threat to the general public, as stated by PCA. Nevertheless, contact tracing efforts are underway, and individuals potentially exposed will be contacted by the health agency.

Regular meetings are being held between PCA, medical officers of health from Alberta’s Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services, and inner-city agencies and organizations to exchange information, extend support, and conduct assessments and screenings for individuals identified as close contacts.
