Thousands of Calgarians gathered under the sunny skies on Tuesday to mark Remembrance Day, leaving veterans feeling encouraged by the strong show of support. Ken McPherson, 65, a veteran who served on peacekeeping missions since 1976, expressed gratitude for the recognition of their sacrifices and the freedom they fought to uphold. Rick Ostashower, 69, a retired Canadian Forces member who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, emphasized the significance of the day and its importance in honoring past and present servicemen.

For Ostashower, Remembrance Day holds a profound personal meaning, likening it to his most valued day of the year, as he reflected on those who paved the way for future generations. Elizabeth Brooks, 16, and her brother William, 22, stressed the importance of preserving the tradition of attending Remembrance Day ceremonies and ensuring the memory of fallen heroes remains alive.

The event in Calgary culminated with a poignant flyby tribute by a C-17 Globemaster aircraft following the playing of the Last Post. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, representing the federal government, laid a wreath in honor of the courageous individuals who sacrificed their lives to safeguard Canadian values of peace, democracy, and human rights. The minister emphasized the importance of honoring the legacy of those who came before us through such commemorations.
