On Remembrance Day, retired major Roy Martel reflects on the veterans who shaped his perception of war, recalling the postmaster in his hometown who returned from the First World War profoundly changed. Martel, now 83 and still independent in his travels, concluded a fulfilling military career without direct combat experience, yet actively involved in critical logistics operations across regions like Egypt and the Balkans during peacekeeping missions.

Recognizing the essential role of logistics in military operations, Martel emphasizes its significance in sustaining and moving troops, equipment, and supplies efficiently. His entry into Canada’s military post-Second World War coincided with escalating Cold War tensions, setting the stage for his impactful contributions to the nation’s defense strategies.

Martel’s personal journey, marked by early adversities as a war orphan born in Nazi-occupied Poland and later adopted by a German couple, underlines his resilience and determination. His military path began with a fortuitous encounter with a recruitment poster during the Cuban Missile Crisis, leading him to enlist in the army and excel in problem-solving tasks as a technician in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals.

Over the years, Martel’s career evolved through various postings and promotions, culminating in his retirement in 1997 after diverse global missions and roles. Despite challenges and poignant moments, such as the loss of a soldier under his command, Martel expresses contentment with his service and remains dedicated to honoring the memory of fellow soldiers on Remembrance Day.

Now residing in Ottawa, Martel cherishes time with his family and looks forward to commemorating Remembrance Day at Perley Health, where he plans to reflect on his military journey and the sacrifices of those who served alongside him.
