A series of demands for money, often targeting business owners, have been escalating into violent acts in communities like Surrey and Abbotsford. The incidents, characterized by threats and gunshots, are part of a growing trend of extortion crimes in British Columbia with potential connections to similar activities across Canada. Police suspect the involvement of Indian agents in these crimes, inspiring both copycats and local offenders.

In October 2023, Edmonton witnessed a surge in violent extortions, arsons, and shootings, primarily targeting South Asian business community members. The perpetrators demanded large sums of money from property developers and construction businesses through WhatsApp messages. The crimes have raised concerns among officials and communities in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, leading to investigations and arrests across the provinces.

Throughout 2023 and 2024, a wave of extortion-related incidents unfolded, involving shootings, arsons, and threats against businesses and individuals in British Columbia and Alberta. The incidents have been linked to organized criminal activities originating in India, with several arrests made in connection to these crimes. Public forums and community events have been held to address the escalating issue and seek solutions to combat extortion threats.

As the extortion wave continued into 2025, the Canadian Trucking Association raised alarms about threats faced by the industry in Surrey. A notable incident involved the targeting of a Surrey woman, marking the first reported injury in a suspected extortion shooting. Law enforcement agencies intensified their efforts, making multiple arrests and launching task forces to address the growing menace of extortion crimes in the region.

The escalating violence and criminal activities have prompted government actions, including the formation of task forces, increased police presence, and the listing of criminal entities as terrorist organizations. Efforts are underway to investigate, prosecute, and prevent further instances of extortion, with a focus on collaboration between federal, provincial, and local authorities to safeguard communities and combat organized crime networks.
