A London theatre company is taking a different approach to exploring love and relationships amidst the prevalence of dating apps and virtual interactions. Theatre Aezir has kicked off a series of performances in London showcasing “Dating Games,” a set of five short plays that delve into the complexities of meeting someone in real life and experiencing romance face-to-face.

According to Aidan Robertson, one of the directors, the current dating scene heavily relies on online platforms, making it crucial to showcase love in its more natural and authentic forms. The plays feature various scenarios, including a depiction of two individuals navigating a clumsy conversation after unexpectedly meeting at a dog park.

Elizabeth Durand, the artistic director of Theatre Aezir, initially questioned the relevance of the play’s themes considering the significant changes in modern dating over the past two decades since they were penned by American writer Garth Wingfield in 1995. However, after thorough review, the younger cast members affirmed that the essence of love and relationships remains constant regardless of how or where people meet, emphasizing the continued relevance of the stories portrayed.

In a challenging display of talent and commitment to the craft, Robertson not only directs the production but also portrays 23 different love interests in the play “Mary Just Broke Up With This Guy.” The theatre company also provides a supportive environment for emerging directors like Robertson, pairing them with mentors to offer valuable guidance and advice. Durand highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent and facilitating their growth within the industry as a core objective of Theatre Aezir.

“Dating Games” is scheduled to run until Nov. 16 at First Baptist Church in downtown London. Tickets can be purchased through Theatre Aezir’s website for those interested in experiencing the unique take on love and relationships presented on stage by the theatre company.
