Canada’s beach volleyball team of Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson faced a setback in the quarterfinals at the world championships held in Adelaide, Australia. The duo, who won Olympic silver, was defeated 2-1 by Brazil’s Rebecca Cavalcante and Carol Solberg.

Despite entering the elimination round undefeated and not having lost a set throughout the week, the Canadians were outplayed by the Brazilian duo. Wilkerson noted that Brazil capitalized on their mistakes, which they hadn’t made earlier in the tournament. She acknowledged the intensity of the match and attributed some errors to organizational lapses that they can address.

In terms of statistics, Brazil had the advantage in attack points with 38 compared to Canada’s 31, and they also out-blocked Canada 4-1. However, Canada led in aces, recording four to Brazil’s two.

Humana-Paredes expressed disappointment in their defensive performance, mentioning that they couldn’t execute defensive plays when necessary, despite it being a strong suit in previous matches. The Canadian team ultimately finished the tournament in fifth place.

Both players acknowledged the loss as a learning opportunity for improvement. Humana-Paredes emphasized the lessons gained from each game, while Wilkerson highlighted the challenges of the post-Olympic year and the team’s resilience in staying competitive.

The world championships will conclude on Sunday with the medal matches.
