Defender Ashton Bell has been named the captain of the Vancouver Goldeneyes in the PWHL, marking a significant milestone for the team. The announcement of the leadership group was made just hours before the Goldeneyes’ debut season opener, with Shannon Woeller, the captain of Vancouver Rise FC and NSL champion, assisting in the revelation.
Hailing from Deloraine, Manitoba, the 25-year-old Bell played a vital role in Ottawa Charge’s journey to the Walter Cup final last season, where she partnered with experienced defender Jocelyne Larocque. Bell, an Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion with the Canadian national team, was the top pick for Vancouver in the expansion draft and has signed a two-season contract with the Goldeneyes.
Vancouver GM Cara Gardner Morey emphasized Bell’s strong leadership qualities as a key factor in her selection as the top draft pick. Gardner Morey commended Bell for being a professional who leads by example and takes care of her teammates.
Joining Bell in the leadership group are defender Claire Thompson and forward Sarah Nurse, who will serve as alternate captains. Both Thompson and Nurse, Olympic gold medalists with Team Canada, were signed by Vancouver during the expansion draft signing period.
Thompson, a 27-year-old from Toronto who returned to professional hockey last season after pursuing medical studies, made an impact in her debut PWHL season by winning the Walter Cup with the Minnesota Frost. Nurse, a 30-year-old from Hamilton, previously played for the Toronto Sceptres and holds the fifth position in career points per game in the PWHL, with 37 points in 45 games.
The Goldeneyes are gearing up to face the Seattle Torrent in their first game on Friday night, which is anticipated to be a record-breaking event with a sold-out crowd. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET, marking an exciting start to the Goldeneyes’ inaugural season in the league.
