Toronto Community Housing has presented a blueprint for the reconstruction of a public housing complex that experienced a ceiling collapse more than three years ago. The redevelopment project, known as Swansea Mews, features three towers, green spaces, and over 100 parking spots. The plan encompasses approximately 650 residences, with a portion designated for affordable housing.

Following the incident in May 2022 that led to the evacuation of Swansea Mews residents due to safety concerns, the buildings have remained uninhabited. Gord Perks, a city councillor, mentioned that Toronto Community Housing is diligently progressing with the project, which received approval from the planning and housing committee in April. The next stage involves seeking approval from the city council, anticipated in February, with Perks expressing confidence in a positive outcome.

Securing federal funding remains a crucial aspect of the project, according to Perks. Despite the optimistic outlook, finalizing the funding is still pending. The completion of the construction is estimated to take a minimum of a couple of years, even under favorable conditions.

Geeta Dixon, a former resident now actively involved in the revitalization initiative as a tenant leader, emphasized the importance of involving residents in the development planning process. Dixon highlighted the significance of communication and community engagement, expressing her satisfaction with being part of the decision-making process.

Toronto Community Housing aims to conduct additional public consultations to gather feedback from the community before the end of the year. Shane Bourne, overseeing revitalization efforts, emphasized the focus on meeting the needs of former residents effectively, considering evolving requirements as the project progresses.

While Dixon contemplates her return to Swansea Mews, she emphasized the potential for many residents to come back, particularly if they have a say in shaping the future development.
