Team Canada secured a spot in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers by triumphing over Mexico in the Group A playoffs at Club Sonoma. Victoria Mboko from Toronto swiftly defeated Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-1 in just 53 minutes. Similarly, Carson Branstine, a dual American-Canadian citizen from Montreal, outplayed Julia Garcia with a 6-3, 7-6 victory, leading Canada to a clean sweep in the best-of-three final.
With the stakes high, Canada avoided a must-win doubles match by clinching both singles matches. Prior to this decisive victory, Canada had defeated Denmark 2-1, setting the stage for the crucial showdown against Mexico. Mexico, on the other hand, had triumphed over Denmark 2-1 in their previous match.
Carson Branstine, who switched allegiance from the United States to Canada in 2017, kickstarted the match against Mexico with a strong performance, securing a singles victory over Julia Garcia with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (5). In a match lasting one hour and 39 minutes, Branstine displayed a solid game, eventually defeating the 22-year-old Garcia who was a crowd favorite.
Reflecting on her performance, Branstine admitted to feeling nervous before the match due to a recent lack of game time and a hamstring injury. Despite these challenges, she executed her game plan effectively and expressed satisfaction with the win.
Following suit, Victoria Mboko showcased her prowess on the court, finishing her match with impressive stats including five aces and a high conversion rate on break points. Mboko acknowledged the difficulty of facing a talented opponent like Zarazua in her home country and emphasized the significance of her win for the team’s success.
The victories by Mboko and Branstine propelled Team Canada to the next stage of the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, highlighting their strong performance and teamwork throughout the tournament.
