Vancouver Rise FC landed at Vancouver International Airport on Sunday afternoon to a warm welcome from fans celebrating their victory in the inaugural Northern Super League (NSL) championship. The team had staged a remarkable comeback against top-ranked AFC Toronto in a thrilling final match marked by lightning delays and intense on-field action.

Fans of various ages gathered at the airport, waving scarves and signs as the players emerged from the arrivals area. Erika Wootten, a dedicated follower of the team, expressed her excitement at finally meeting the players in person after supporting them throughout the season.

Wootten, a member of the Crow Collective supporters group, explained that the group’s name is inspired by the nightly crow migration over Burnaby, where Swangard Stadium, the team’s home field, is located. She enthusiastically joined in the celebratory atmosphere, emphasizing the team’s resilience and determination throughout the season.

Despite facing challenges, including being considered underdogs against a high-scoring Toronto team, Vancouver Rise persevered and secured a memorable victory in the championship final. Head coach Anja Heiner-Møller praised the fans for their unwavering support, highlighting their role in the team’s success.

The team’s ability to remain composed in difficult situations and stage comebacks has been a defining feature of their play, according to Heiner-Møller. Forward Mariah Lee, still in disbelief over the win, described waking up as a champion and emphasized the significance of the victory for women’s sports in Canada.

Lee highlighted the quality of players in the league and emphasized the ongoing push to promote women’s sports, signaling Canada’s commitment to advancing the women’s professional soccer scene. Additionally, the federal government announced a substantial financial commitment to support the NSL and further develop women’s professional soccer in Canada.

The championship win not only marks a significant achievement for Vancouver Rise but also signifies a positive step forward for women’s sports in the country. The team’s triumph showcases their talent and determination, setting a strong example for women’s sports on a global scale.
