Chrysler is issuing a recall for numerous Jeep plug-in hybrid vehicles due to a defective battery that poses a fire risk. The recall affects more than 20,000 vehicles in Canada, 320,000 in the U.S., and over 30,000 in other global markets. The company, a subsidiary of Netherlands-based Stellantis, has reported 19 fires and one injury linked to the battery issue following an internal investigation. The faulty batteries were supplied by Samsung SDI America, located in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Affected vehicle models include specific Jeep Wrangler 4xe units from model years 2020-2025 and certain Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe SUVs from model years 2022-2026. Owners are advised to park these vehicles outdoors away from structures until a solution is identified. Additionally, owners should refrain from charging the vehicles as the risk diminishes when the battery is discharged.
Interim notification letters will be sent to owners by Dec. 2, with further updates to follow once a permanent solution is established. The recall number is 68C, and concerned owners can reach out to Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.
