The head coach of the Swift Current Broncos has stepped down following an inquiry by the Western Hockey League that revealed his violation of the league’s conduct standards. Dean DeSilva resigned from his role as head coach after the WHL imposed a five-game suspension on him and fined the team $10,000. The league stated that DeSilva breached its conduct standards during two on-ice incidents while dealing with player discipline.

In response to the situation, WHL commissioner Dan Near emphasized the importance of accountability within the league’s culture, emphasizing the need for clear and consistent standards of conduct for all members, including players, coaches, and executives. The league asserted that when these standards are not met, necessary actions will be taken to maintain integrity and safeguard the well-being of everyone involved in the sport.

DeSilva’s suspension, which took place from November 5 to November 11, culminated in his resignation on November 14, as announced by the Broncos. General manager Chad Leslie expressed that after careful consideration, it was mutually decided that DeSilva’s resignation was in the best interest of both parties and the organization’s future. The Broncos reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a positive environment for all players.

Notably, this development follows a similar incident two years ago involving the Swift Current Broncos and their then head coach, Devan Praught, who mutually agreed to part ways after receiving a five-game suspension for allegedly violating the WHL conduct standards.

In a separate announcement, the WHL disclosed the suspension of Peter Anholt, the general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, along with a $10,000 fine for the team. Anholt was found to have breached conduct standards by employing intimidating behavior and language during a post-game address to players following a loss to Edmonton in October. Anholt is slated to resume his duties on November 26 and acknowledged that his actions did not align with the team’s commitment to providing a positive player environment. He accepted the WHL’s disciplinary measures and pledged to maintain a higher standard moving forward.

Both investigations into DeSilva and Anholt were initiated following reports to the WHL Respect Line, an anonymous tip line operated by the league to address such matters.
