A Ukrainian surgeon, who usually works at a public trauma hospital, has traveled to Hamilton to expand her knowledge on life-saving techniques for victims of the ongoing Russian invasion in Ukraine. Dr. Mariia Kuzeikiv is one of seven Ukrainian doctors participating in Hamilton Health Sciences’ ASSIST program, initiated in 2022 by Dr. Mark Pahuta, an orthopedic spine surgeon at McMaster University. Dr. Pahuta, with Ukrainian roots and connections, felt compelled to contribute his skills to aid Ukraine amidst the current crisis.
Since the full-scale military invasion by Russia in February 2022, the conflict has led to a tragic loss of civilian lives, with over 14,000 casualties, including 745 children, according to recent data from the United Nations. Efforts to end the war are underway, but the situation remains dire. In a recent attack in Ternopil, Ukraine, 26 people lost their lives, and nearly 100 were injured due to a Russian drone and missile strike.
Dr. Pahuta emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine’s medical professionals, highlighting the strain on hospitals when sending surgeons abroad. The program aims to equip Ukrainian doctors with valuable skills that they can apply back home. Dr. Kuzeikiv, specializing in treating blast and gunshot trauma in Ukraine, hopes to implement her learnings from Hamilton to assist patients in Lviv upon her return.
During her time in Canada, Dr. Kuzeikiv had the opportunity to observe and participate in surgeries, including a complex lower back procedure to stabilize a pelvic fracture. Learning advanced techniques like navigation will enhance her ability to care for patients in Lviv, a city also affected by the conflict. Dr. Paul Klas, a trauma surgeon at Hamilton Health Sciences, commended the learning environment provided in Hamilton, known for its high volume of orthopedic trauma cases.
Dr. Pahuta emphasized the mutual learning experience with Ukrainian fellows, acknowledging the innovation that arises during wartime. By collaborating with Ukrainian surgeons, they aim to exchange knowledge and improve patient care. The program not only benefits the Ukrainian doctors but also enriches the medical community in Hamilton through shared experiences and expertise exchange.
