A group of twenty-five players is set to take part in the Canadian women’s hockey team’s Rivalry Series this week, as Hockey Canada progresses towards finalizing the squad for the upcoming Olympics defense. The competition between Canada and the U.S. will serve as a crucial evaluation for players vying for a spot on the Olympic roster, especially with less than 100 days remaining until the Winter Games in Milan, Italy.

This year’s Rivalry Series will provide a rare opportunity for the team to test different line combinations and enhance chemistry, given that they will only have four games together before the Olympics kick off in February. The series will commence in Cleveland, Ohio, on Thursday, followed by a game in Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday. The final two games of the Rivalry Series are scheduled to take place in Edmonton on December 10 and 13, with expectations of a roster adjustment for these matches.

Head coach Troy Ryan and the team management face tough decisions in finalizing the roster to 23 players for the Olympics. The General Manager of Team Canada, Gina Kingsbury, emphasized the significance of these games in shaping the team’s on-ice identity and success for the upcoming Winter Games.

Unlike previous practices of centralized training, the selection process for the Canadian team has been altered. Thirty Olympic hopefuls participated in three training blocks across the country this fall instead of training together at a centralized location for months.

The U.S. leg of the Rivalry Series will feature a 25-player roster with notable NCAA players vying for their first Olympic team selection. The team will rely on experienced veterans upfront, including captain Marie-Philip Poulin, alongside promising talents like defender Chloe Primerano and goaltender Ève Gascon. The absence of key players like Jocelyne Larocque and Ann-Renée Desbiens will provide opportunities for others to showcase their skills.

With the final Olympic roster limited to twenty-three players, the team faces challenges in making decisions, especially in the defense lineup. The upcoming PWHL camps are expected to play a crucial role in observing player chemistry and performance dynamics ahead of the Olympic Games.

In the midst of limited preparation time, the coaching staff is keen on observing player interactions and teamwork during training camps. The upcoming PWHL camps will be instrumental in assessing player development and finalizing the Olympic roster. The league’s regular season is set to open soon, shaping up the players’ form and readiness for the prestigious event.
