Sudbury’s Memorial Park is undergoing revitalization efforts to restore its former charm and play a role in the revitalization of the city’s downtown area. Many downtown spaces in northern Ontario were neglected during the COVID-19 pandemic as people stayed home, and post-pandemic foot traffic remained low.
During the early stages of the pandemic, a homeless encampment emerged in Memorial Park, prompting the city to evict the occupants in June 2021. Presently, restoration work is focused on repairing the park’s infrastructure, including reseeding the north lawn this fall and planning for work on the south side in the upcoming spring.
Jeff Pafford, the city’s director of parks and leisure services, highlighted ongoing efforts such as pruning bushes and trees to enhance visibility towards city hall. Additionally, plans are in place for installing areas for pop-up vendors and food trucks, upgrading a performance stage, and improving seating arrangements by next spring. These developments aim to create a vibrant and inviting space to draw people back downtown.
According to Jeff MacIntyre, executive director of Downtown Sudbury, reinvigorating the downtown core has been challenging post-pandemic, with the loss of several businesses due to retirements hastened by COVID-related disruptions. MacIntyre estimated that downtown Sudbury is halfway through its rebuilding phase and views the Memorial Park makeover as a crucial step in the downtown revitalization process.
MacIntyre is actively working to introduce more festivals to Memorial Park in a bid to attract patrons to downtown businesses and eateries. Despite facing difficulties in post-pandemic event planning, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining the park’s appeal through continuous care and hosting engaging events to draw crowds.
He also advocates for government assistance in providing housing and social services to individuals who frequent public spaces like Memorial Park. Meanwhile, park crews are diligently preparing the grounds for a spring unveiling and have noted a positive response from the community, expressing excitement for the park’s restoration efforts.
