Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime secured a crucial win at the ATP Finals by staging a comeback to defeat Ben Shelton of the United States with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5 in Turin, Italy. This victory leveled Auger-Aliassime’s record at 1-1 in the prestigious year-end men’s tennis tournament.

Auger-Aliassime, a 25-year-old Canadian, entered the match after suffering a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Italy’s Jannik Sinner. Despite facing challenges, including an apparent leg injury, he fought hard against Shelton and was on the brink of defeat in the second-set tiebreak. However, he managed to rally from a set down for the fourth time in his last eight matches, enhancing his career record against Shelton to 2-0.

Reflecting on the match, Auger-Aliassime acknowledged Shelton’s strong start but highlighted his own resilience in finding ways to turn the tide. Auger-Aliassime emphasized the importance of staying focused and fighting for each point.

In the upcoming match, Auger-Aliassime is set to face Alexander Zverev, with a potential semifinal spot on the line. On the other hand, Shelton’s defeat against Auger-Aliassime pushed him to a 0-2 record, eliminating his chances of progressing beyond the group stage. Sinner, meanwhile, secured his spot in the semifinals with a commanding 6-4, 6-3 victory over Zverev.

Auger-Aliassime’s performance at the ATP Finals marks his second appearance at the prestigious event. In a previous edition, he stunned Rafael Nadal but fell short in advancing due to losses in his other matches.

During the intense match, Shelton initially dominated the first set but faced setbacks, allowing Auger-Aliassime to make a comeback. Shelton’s frustration was evident as he reacted by hitting his racket on the ground, earning a code violation warning. Despite the back-and-forth battle, Auger-Aliassime maintained his composure and clinched the victory in the final moments of the match.

This thrilling encounter at the ATP Finals showcases the competitive spirit and determination of these talented players on the international stage.
