A 21-year-old law student at the University of Hong Kong, identified as L., expressed her shock upon discovering that another student had used artificial intelligence to create pornographic images of her without her consent. Initially, she blamed herself and refrained from using social media out of fear of unauthorized access to her photos. The male student’s former partner found over 700 photos, including AI-generated explicit images, on his laptop in February, as reported by L., B., and H., who spoke anonymously to CBC.

The laptop contained multiple folders with screenshots of women taken from social media without consent, along with explicit photos produced using AI tools, as revealed by L., B., and H. The three students decided to publicize the incident in July by sharing a detailed account on an Instagram page. Despite an apology letter and a warning from the University of Hong Kong, they felt that the actions taken were insufficient to hold the male student accountable.

The university is currently reviewing the matter, with promises of further action. Hong Kong’s Secretary for Security, John Lee, has pledged to explore global best practices in regulating AI following the incident. The students are still grappling with a lack of resolution, as their complaint to the Equal Opportunities Commission did not progress due to insufficient grounds for sexual harassment claims under current regulations.

The absence of specific laws criminalizing AI-generated pornography creation in Hong Kong highlights a global challenge in policing and regulating such content without consent. The article touches on legislative developments in various countries to address similar issues, emphasizing the necessity of robust legal frameworks and platform accountability in combating non-consensual deepfake porn.

Furthermore, experts note the evolving nature of AI technology, making it increasingly challenging to detect AI-generated content. Organizations supporting victims of deepfake incidents have reported a rise in requests for assistance, underscoring the urgency of addressing this growing threat. The article also highlights the limitations faced by authorities in addressing AI deepfake porn under existing legislation, calling for enhanced legal protections for adults against such violations.
