Major League Baseball has announced that its approved sports betting partners will implement a $200 bet limit on individual pitches and will exclude them from combination bets, following the recent scandal involving two Cleveland Guardians players who were accused of manipulating pitches for gamblers. The new restrictions aim to reduce the risk of integrity issues associated with pitch-level bets that focus on specific player actions that may not significantly impact the overall game outcome.

The indicted players, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, face charges including wire fraud conspiracy and bribery for allegedly accepting bribes to alter their pitching performance. Both players maintain their innocence, with Ortiz’s lawyer emphasizing his client’s dedication to fair play and Clase’s lawyer asserting his innocence and commitment to helping his team succeed.

The Supreme Court’s 2018 decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act paved the way for states to legalize sports betting, leading to increased scrutiny on potential gambling-related misconduct in professional sports. Ortiz, who was granted release with stringent conditions, has been accused of accepting bribes to manipulate pitches in favor of bettors, particularly in his native Dominican Republic.

The players have been on paid leave since July, amid suspicions of unusual betting patterns coinciding with their games. MLB initiated an investigation into the matter and has cooperated with law enforcement agencies. The Guardians have pledged full cooperation with ongoing investigations by both MLB and law enforcement authorities.

In a separate case involving NBA figures, including Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier, more than 30 individuals were recently arrested in connection with illegal sports betting activities, highlighting the broader crackdown on gambling-related misconduct across professional sports.
