Sherry Mermuys from West Covehead has been enjoying the Toronto Blue Jays’ playoff games with her son and daughter-in-law recently. Their family gathering before Game 5 of the World Series was interrupted by a surprise video call from Mermuys’ daughter in Ottawa.

The exciting news was that Mermuys had a ticket for Game 7 in Toronto if the World Series extended to that game. Her daughter and son-in-law had purchased the tickets online as soon as they were available, keeping it a secret until the big reveal.

Expressing her disbelief, Mermuys mentioned, “I was just flabbergasted. The first thing out of my mouth was, ‘No way, no way.’ I couldn’t believe it. I was just shocked.”

Prepared for the game with a packed bag including a Jays hat and an Anne of Green Gables wig, Mermuys, a Jays fan since 2012, has never attended a live game. Fond memories of playing baseball as a child with neighborhood kids and her brothers have fueled her passion for the sport.

Despite her loyalty to the Blue Jays, watching Game 6 was a conflicting experience as she needed the team to lose for a Game 7 to happen. Ultimately, the Dodgers secured a 3-1 victory.

Mermuys, accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law, is eagerly looking forward to witnessing the game at Rogers Centre. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, highlighting the significance of sharing the experience with her beloved family.

Reflecting on the unpredictability of sports, Mermuys remarked, “You never know what’s gonna happen and how quickly it’ll change. I get to experience whether they win or not. I’ll get to watch the whole thing. It’ll mean so much to me to be there with my family… I just have the best family. My kids are the best.”
