The older of two siblings who senselessly killed an 18-year-old admitted to manslaughter charges on Friday. Danillo Canales Glenn was tragically attacked and fatally stabbed by the 16- and 18-year-old brothers while playing basketball with friends at the Copperfield Community Centre in southeast Calgary. The older brother’s identity is protected due to a publication ban safeguarding the younger brother under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Originally facing second-degree murder charges, the younger brother was convicted of manslaughter following a trial last December.
Through negotiations between defense attorney Andrea Urquhart and prosecutor Vicki Faulkner, the older brother entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on Friday. Reports, including a risk evaluation, were requested, and the now-young man, accompanied by five family members, will face sentencing in the upcoming year. An agreed statement of facts (ASF) accompanying the plea provides details of the incident.
On the evening of September 5, 2023, Canales Glenn and his friends were playing basketball at the Copperfield Community Centre when the brothers, wearing hoodies, approached them. The brothers initiated a confrontation, leading to a violent attack where Canales Glenn was beaten and stabbed. Witnesses, including younger children playing nearby, observed the assault.
Despite efforts of Canales Glenn’s friends to save him by calling 911 and performing CPR, he succumbed to his injuries at the Foothills hospital. The police were able to identify the brothers through a sneaker left at the scene, CCTV footage, and witness descriptions. The case is scheduled for a sentencing hearing in December.
