NDP leadership contender Avi Lewis emphasized the need for a shift away from increasing fossil fuel production in Canada, likening it to an “addiction.” Speaking at a panel alongside rivals Rob Ashton and Heather McPherson, Lewis differentiated himself by pledging against further expansion of natural gas, oil, or coal within the country. He stressed the necessity for clear policies that set the federal NDP apart from the Liberals, emphasizing the imperative to halt the continuous growth of fossil fuel production.

Lewis highlighted the importance of the federal NDP maintaining the ability to disagree with provincial branches. He advocated for embracing “safe forms” of energy generation that align with modern standards. Describing society’s reliance on fossil fuels as an addiction fueled by both financial interests and the substances themselves, Lewis underscored the urgency of transitioning towards more sustainable energy practices.

Citing scientific consensus on the role of fossil fuels in hastening climate change, Lewis referenced data indicating that coal, oil, and gas account for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. Although McPherson, an MP from an oil-producing region, did not challenge Lewis on stage, she downplayed his statements as not introducing new ideas, noting that similar commitments had been part of the NDP’s policy since Jack Layton’s era.

While the NDP’s 2021 policy document does not explicitly mention restricting fossil fuel production expansion, it does promise to end government subsidies for the sector. Past leaders like Thomas Mulcair and Jagmeet Singh faced challenges in effectively communicating the party’s stance on fossil fuel-related issues. This position has created tensions between the federal NDP and its branches in provinces reliant on fossil fuel revenue.

McPherson outlined her vision of creating employment opportunities for young people, focusing on sectors like trades, arts, health care, and green jobs through initiatives like the Youth Climate Corps. She also proposed initiatives such as high-speed rail development, building a clean energy corridor, and retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency.

During the panel discussion, Ashton underscored the need to expand renewable energy sources like wind power, advocating for local production of wind turbines to create unionized jobs. He emphasized the importance of evaluating environmental impacts and securing Indigenous consent in resource development projects. Ashton stressed the necessity of transitioning to a green economy that offers competitive wages to support families, highlighting the importance of job creation in sustainable sectors.

The candidates participated in the Mouseland Gala in Ottawa, moderated by Jordan Leichnitz from CBC’s Power and Politics. The event also featured video messages from other contenders Tanille Johnston and Tony McQuail. The leadership race has brought to the forefront differing visions on rebuilding the NDP, with candidates offering various perspectives on addressing key issues facing the party.
