Police in Guelph are currently investigating a theft incident involving a refrigerated trailer containing whipped cream worth $80,000. The theft occurred in the early hours of Wednesday near Speedvale Avenue W. close to Woolwich Street. The stolen Wabash refrigerated trailer, loaded with 30 pallets of Gay Lea-branded whipped cream, was towed away from the scene.

According to Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey, it is unclear whether the thief targeted the trailer itself or the valuable whipped cream inside. Tracey emphasized that the motive behind the theft remains uncertain. The trailer alone is valued at around $50,000, even without considering the contents.

A representative from Gay Lea Foods, Robin Redstone, confirmed that the stolen trailer and whipped cream belonged to the company’s Speedvale Avenue W. facility. Redstone stated that they are fully cooperating with law enforcement to assist in resolving the matter.

This incident stands in contrast to a series of butter thefts that have occurred in the Guelph, Brantford, and Waterloo regions over the past two years. Unlike the previous butter thefts, where individuals targeted grocery stores, the whipped cream theft appears to have been a different kind of operation. Guelph police are seeking information from the public and encourage anyone with relevant details to contact Const. Jonathan Schleen at 519-824-1212, ext. 7570, or reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
