Thirteen individuals have been forced to leave a supportive housing facility in Prince George, B.C., following a fire on the third floor. The incident at 160 Ontario St. was attended by Prince George Fire Rescue around 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, with 15 firefighters responding from three different stations. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the building was successfully preserved. However, the city authorities estimate smoke and water damage costs at approximately $50,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The building, situated close to the city’s downtown area, was inaugurated in 2022 through a collaboration between the city and B.C. Housing. It was established to offer 50 essential supportive homes for individuals facing or at risk of homelessness, providing them with access to support services and training opportunities.

During a visit by a CBC News journalist to the site, no visible external damage was observed. Initially, it was thought that 15 people had been displaced, but B.C. Housing later revised the count to 13. The agency released a statement mentioning that emergency support services from the city are currently assisting the affected residents. Meanwhile, B.C. Housing and the Connective Support Society, responsible for operating the building, are actively arranging temporary accommodations while investigations and repairs are ongoing.
